Great Lake Tonle Sap, Cambodia
Tonle Sap Lake just south of Siem Reap, the city is the largest lake in Cambodia and plays an integral role in the balance ecology of the country.
In the dry season is a shallow lake that drains through the Tonle Sap river in the Mekong River in Phnom Penh. However, this changes in the monsoon from June to November season, when high water level of Mekong River causes a reverse flow of the Tonle Sap river in the area of the lake. The influx increases the size of the lake since at least 2500 square kilometers to more than 10,000 square kilometers. This makes the lake the largest freshwater lake in Southeast Asia during the wet season.
The flood plain of mangrove forests are home to over 100 varieties of water birds including a number of species threatened or endangered. There are over 200 varieties of fish in its waters and crocodiles in maroques otters and turtles.
The lake is filled with floating villages inhabited by communities in both Cambodia and Vietnam. The individual villages are a great show with floating houses, markets, schools and churches. The villagers earn their living by fishing with fish traps capture large enough to supply Cambodia with half of their fish consumption.
One of the most prominent floating villages is Khneas Chong. It is 12 kilometers south of Siem Reap and is a place of departure or arrival for the ferry service Phnom Penh and travel Tone Sap lake resort.
While this floating village is a well known signal, the tuk tuk driver who brought the group of Siem Reap said fewer tourist-oriented towns of Kampong Khleang Kampong Pluk and gave more than one idea in the life of the lake. Both towns are south of Chong Khneas on the eastern side of the lake. Kampong Khleang is actually the largest floating community Tonle Sap. This agreement also has a thriving Vietnamese ceramics industry as there was a lot of clay pots in front of most houses.
West of Khneas Chong at the north end of the lake is the Prek Toal Bird Sanctuary. This reserve is and has been called the most important breeding ground in Southeast Asia for waterfowl large. Species such as Black-headed ibis, spot billed Pelican, Grey headed Fish Eagle, Painted Stork Millet stock and nest in the area. The sanctuary is the most popular with bird watchers in the months of dry season when flocks of migratory birds visit the area.
During the dry season the lake water flow is reversed with the entry into the Mekong River, providing a balance needed for the river south of Tonle Sap. The flow of fresh water in the Mekong delta Vietnam offers a buffer to the headwaters of salt South China Sea to enter the delta farmland.
