What you can learn from a Competition Tractor
Raised in a small town Wallis, TX, where flower farms and tractors to play a role Key in everyday life, seems only right that the restoration of old tractors would become a passion for local Future Farmers of America (FFA) adolescents.
Inspired by the passion, two teenagers Wallis entered the 2005 Chevron Delo Tractor Restoration Competition, making it all the way to the finals of the event FFA National Convention in Louisville, Kentucky. The Tractor Restoration Competition rewards the determination, mechanical skills and business knowledge of high members FFA in school age throughout the country. Students are required to submit a book detailing the complete restoration process. The skills learned through help develop competition to participants in future leaders in the agricultural community.
The teenagers, members of the Brazos, Texas, FFA, the share an aptitude for mechanical repair and an interest in vintage tractors and one more thing: Tyler and Jordan Raska are brother and sister.
While the scenario might have become a sibling rivalry, the Raska instead adopted an alternative approach to their restoration projects. Instead of fighting to defeat the other, Tyler and Jordan worked together on their tractors, encouragement and support along the road. Throughout the long hours to renew their tractors and carefully documenting the whole process, the brother and sister team bonded in the middle of the grease, paint and rusted parts tractor.
In the end, however, could only be one winner. Hard work, dedication and knowledge of mechanics paid for 18 years, Tyler Raska, the individual winner of the Chevron Delo Tractor Restoration Competition.
A senior at Brazos High, Tyler is no stranger to competitions tractor. He has been restoring tractors for four years, and begat a year especially successful in 2005, winning all eight events he attended with his grandfather Deere 1959 John 630, including a national contest and three state competitions.
Tyler, who has a learning disability, has benefited greatly from participation in competitions tractor. They have helped him focus on his strengths and build confidence, improving project management and public speaking. And every year their knowledge of tractor parts has grown.
"I like having an old tractor and do as well as Again, if not better than the original, "Tyler said." This year was especially rewarding because I worked in the garage with my grandfather and restored something that was special to him. "
As it falls a bit short in their quest for the title, the experience was a huge positive one for Jordan, the only girl in the Brazos FFA to enter the competition. Tired of being the girl "go-fer" of Tyler, while working on his tractors, Jordan decided to overcome their own restoration, a John Deere 420.
Jordan, in his first year show tractors, initially inspired by an unlikely place-the music video "Save a Horse, Ride a Cowboy "by country group of large and rich. The music video features Gretchen Wilson driving a" cute "tractor and Jordan decided he wanted restore a well.
Working closely with his brother and his father, knowing Jordan tractors increased dramatically in the course of the project. She did what much of the work itself could then men consulted for explanations and demonstrations when necessary.

Currently, both Tyler and Jordan to restore tractors for the 2006 Chevron Delo Tractor Restoration Competition. Each has its own tractor, plus they are working on a set. With another year of experience under his belt, teenagers are looking forward to the event next year and perhaps another Raska on the podium of the winners.
