Yunnan Province of China

But while the northeast of China, like Beijing and Shandong may represent the center of the People's Republic is in the west, where we found a unique cultural diversity that is so attractive to passengers.

Nowhere in the country may find a varied splendor China's minority population that "South of the Clouds, Yunnan. Located in the southwest corner of four other provinces, Yunnan also shares borders with three countries (that are not too including Thailand and India), its proximity resulting in the highest concentration of ethnic groups throughout China.

However, with the northern city of Lijiang Naxi have to be China's hottest holiday destination for tourist groups near a comfortable retreat for young Dali backpackers Zhongdian and a starting point for Tibet, southern Yunnan remains a relatively unspoilt region.

In the concrete jungle of the provincial capital of Kunming City in tropical forests of Xishuangbanna, the writer omits the most popular route into Laos and Vietnam in the least explored areas around the perimeter of Burma. My timing was perfect, arriving in the village just before his Menghun Sunday market.

A quiet community, accented with stilted wooden houses and a monastery hill overlooking fields surrounding rice, rainy day time served to improve the reluctance of the village. But through the gray color that I meet to be the region revealed thselves multi-ethnic minorities.By midmorning Menghun relatively small market, abounding with freshly slaughtered pig's head, bright fruit and vegetables plugs rainbowof snuff and textiles, became a veritable kaleidoscope of culture unlike any I have every witnessed. I first met for the glory majority population silky Xishuangbanna, the Dai, a culture of 2000 years of age, who blends elements Hinayana Buddhism in Thailand. The dress in bright attractive Dai clothing, but Dai is the youngest girls in their pastel sarongs formfitting to call the attention of a joke before runing far as nymphs.

Besides illuminating contrast black day were the Akha, known as Hani. Like a bright bird jungle yet elusive, the Akha are the lush hills depth to which only the market day, where are decorated in heavy layers of shiny black embossed intricate embroidery patterns. The descendants of Tibetan nomads Qiang, each subgroup Hani headgear use different colors to indicate their tribe, not unlike the plumage of a bird proudly customize bracelets and richly adorned with silver leggings, handbags and coins antique patchwork stretching their earlobes. Backstrap baskets around his head and teeth stained red with betel nut are common.

Especially tired of the strangers who timidly skirts all my progress, however the persistence friendly with a sincere interest in their lifestyle suddenly I granted access to an Akha close-knit clan. They spoke very little Mandarin, and of course no English, so they simply relied on gestures and smiles, in an attempt to learn from each other.

At noon the market had cleared along with the rain, the streets, now filled with knots of indigenous people living in hopes of tractors to take them back to their nearby villages.

My journey continued through the Xishuangbanna Autonomous Prefecture take me deeper in the surrounding rainforest, including a 50 km trek from Bulongshan to Damenglong. But those are stories for another time. For now I will remember that small town Menghun colorful but, as in any other I've never seen a pretty definitive representation of ethnic minorities in China proud.

Favourite Fandian backpackers is Baita (White Tower Hotel, 10 yua for a bed), on the outskirts of the city and overlooking a lily pond teaming with fish and frogs. Instructions are complicated by what is best to ask locals to point out that

Regional Cuisine

Rice is the staple food of the Dai people, were the first in the history of the world for the cultivation of rice as a food. Sticky rice baked in bamboo fragrance is a specialty. Local Xishuangbanna also enjoy nibbling in the flexible cable to the grid from street vendors, and perpetually chewing betel nut (binglang) mixed with lime, which gives a narcotic effect, whereas staining red mouth.
